Early detection of possible events essential
Most bioterrorism agents cause diseases that are rapidly fatal
May be treatable in early stages or preventable with antibiotics,vaccination, or anti-sera
If person-to-person transmission, early intervention may be best disease prevention strategy

Syndromic surveillance
Not to identify individuals, but to detect patterns of symptoms, and findings .
Examples –
Rates of respiratory illness in the emergency department
Numbers of blood cultures ordered in a hospital
